Driving cars with dangerously high decibel
For those of us who race occasionally, we are only all too familiar with this scenario.
- A long road trip to the track
- Driving solo in your track prepped car
- In many cases the car would probably not have any audio equipment
- Even if you do, you might not even be able to hear it above the exhaust drone
- A 3 hour lonesome drive, all in the name of motorsports.
In my 92 Honda Civic EG6, that is exactly what happens on the drive up to the Sepang track. I do not have the luxury of having a trailer to tow the car up and driving in the air con comfort of a SUV. Alternatively I could use a car carrier trailer, but we do not have a large enough group to consolidate. Plus it is hard to coordinate and have everyone show up together at the same time to load up the cars.
The civic has a close ratio transmission, some uncomfortable suspension, loud blaring exhaust, blah blah… basically, I’m cruising on the NS highway at a comfortable 125-130km/h average speed, 5500 rpm on the rev counter, 105dB from the exhaust, RESONATING through the cabin!!
EARPLUGS I hear? Yes, I have tried many different brands of them. 3M, Moldex, and even my well insulated tuning headphones from David Clarke as used by aviators. I am only short of investing big bucks on a good active noise cancelling headphone. However, I think I might have found the perfect way to get around the agonizing drive.
The answers are these Howard Leight in ear single use earplugs. As far as I know, they are the best and most comfortable earplugs I have used. I am not an advocate of driving without being able to hear any feedback from the car. With earplugs, you are going to be deaf to any occurrence. Given that a race car is obviously heavily modified, there is always a high chance of something spoiling on me. With earplugs, I will be driving blind to any possible engine malfunction. Like in case of an engine failure, or your fender garnish coming loose and flapping in the wind. The only thing that would warn me that my car was on fire/smoking would be the curious glances of the many Proton drivers I pass on the highway. Not to mention looking like an blur sotong, this could even be a potential hazard to to other road users.
But I see myself with little choice, looking at the bigger picture, protecting myself from any hearing loss is obviously more important. Studies have shown that repeated exposure to loud noise for extended period of time will lead to hearing loss. I don’t want to end up like him.
OK, jokes aside, I managed to think of a simple solution which seems to be pretty elegant and only costs a pittance.
What you need are these Howard Leight earplugs, some running earhook earphones and a ipod/phone with some of your favourite music. These Howard Leight MAX ear plugs are rated to a maximum of 33dB attenuation. Comfortable to wear, and are superior to any other earplugs I have tried. Lightly lay the earphones over the earplugs, and allow the earplugs to work as a sound conducting medium; bringing melodious music over the din. It helps that the rear portion of the earplugs has a large diameter and a plane surface, which allows the earphones to rest comfortably on it.
I find that securing the earphones by slotting the around ear portion behind a pair of sunglasses is the best way to keep them in place.
